This product was cheaply made and fell apart in my hands. The sleeves tore off while I was trying to put it on my two year old. The ribbon that was attached to the "tutu" part fell off before the costume was all the way on my child. My husband and I are very disappointed in the product.

Disappointed in CA
By Kerry JoVerified Purchaser from Foothill Ranch, CA on 11/1/2007
Cons:
Poor Construction
Bottom Line:

Comments about Lillian Vernon Mermaid Costume:

This costume is adorable, but that's it. It tore the second time my daughter tried it on. We fixed it, and it tore again. The material is itchy and way too fragile! Plus, it runs very small. My daughter wears a size 7 and I ordered a size 8/10 and it barely fit. This costume didn't even make it to Halloween. My daughter had to choose another costume from her "dress-up" chest for Halloween night. Very disappointing for a young girl.

My daughter loves this costume. Unfortunately after wearing it one time, the skirt that is connected to the waste tore out of the seam and the edges came unravelled. The shoulder edges also came unravelled. At first I thought she was pulling too hard on the costume, but I was able to easily pull the skirt off without scissors or sewing equipment. Now it is a skirtless mermaid costume.

Comments about Lillian Vernon Mermaid Costume:

This was a complete waste of my money! I wish I had listened to the other customers' comments!

I bought the size 4-6 for my 4.5-year-old, and when she tried it on for the first time, the ruffles fell apart at the seams and edges. I had to re-sew them completely, and I'm lucky to have experience with sewing difficult fabrics and a good sewing machine. She also complained about the elastic waistband being very tight. The tiara was way too small also. My child is average size, average height for her age, and this dress did not fit her - it certainly would not fit a 5- or 6-year-old.

Don't embarrass your child with a dress that looks like she's in rags!

Service & Delivery comments:

Fancy but Flimsy
By ocmomVerified Purchaser from ocean city, md on 10/30/2007
Pros:
Attractive Design
Cons:
Flimsy, Poor Construction
Bottom Line:

Comments about Lillian Vernon Mermaid Costume:

Like everyone else, I found this costume to be poorly constructed. After one wear, it was fraying everywhere! I fixed it back up with some grosgrain ribbon and a glue gun and now it is good to go. If I had it to do all over again (which I wouldn't), I would take the costume directly out of the box and run a bead of glue from my glue gun around the waist of the costume and the outside trim of the waist and the frilly shoulder fabric to prevent the fraying. But my daughter loves it!

fits tight (made for tall skinny kids)
By momVerified Purchaser from orange county, ca on 10/29/2007
Pros:
Attractive Design
Cons:
Flimsy, Poor Construction

Comments about Lillian Vernon Mermaid Costume:

My daughter is quite thin and it was a snug fit on her (I got the age appropriate size). As with many haloween costumes it fell apart after weating it once. The middle sash came off and the cap sleeves began unraveling. The crown is way to small to wear on your head much less wear over a wig. That being said it is a really pretty costume.

Best Uses:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Lillian Vernon Mermaid Costume:

I was very surprised about the color of the wig upon receiving it. It is a super bright fire red. I liked the color in the add much better. It tangles easy and the hair falls out in little strands. My daughter absolutely loves it so that is what matters. The price was right to complete her mermaid halloween costume that my aunt made. Really - for the price I paid, it is a good deal!

Pros:

Cons:
Flimsy, Poor Construction
Best Uses:
Halloween
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Lillian Vernon Mermaid Costume:

I probably should have read the reviews on this costume prior to purchasing. While it is very cute the construction leaves a lot to be desired. The skirt can easily be pulled away from the bodice and the waistband has elastic that is entirely too tight. I had to cut it to make it comfortable for my daughter who is tiny. I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone due to the construction. We have 4 Halloween events to attend and she will be wearing something else to some of them because I'm scared this will fall apart.

Pros:

Cons:
Flimsy, Poor Construction
Best Uses:
None
Describe Yourself:
Parent of Two or More Children
Bottom Line:

Comments about Lillian Vernon Mermaid Costume:

I bought this costume for my three year old who is of average size and she barely fit into it. Not only is it tight, it is very very poorly made. While she was trying it on the skirt started to rip off and the stitching along the edge of the skirt started unravelling. She wore the costume to ballet class and came out with the skirt barely attached. It is in such poor shape after she only wore it for 45 minutes that I'm not sure she'll be able to wear it for halloween. Also, it was supposed to come with a wig and it was not included in the package.

My daughter really wanted this costume because it is one of the few that has a "tail". Unfortunately, the 4-6 size is too small for my 4 year old. She's not a large girl, normally wears a 4T or 4/5. The first time she put it on the peplum skirt ripped out of the waist seam. Even the headband is too small to go around the red wig.

The finishing seam on the waist ruffle torn off and frayed a fourth-inch material as I was trying to press the ruffle down with my hand. My granddaughter loves this costume so I will not return it but will try to press iron-on lining material on the seams so it won't fray any more. This will be a lot of work because this is also on the sleeves. The price of the costume was high enough that this should be a quality product. I will hesitate to purchase another costume from the vendor in the future.

My daughter who is 5 loves the costume but it tore the first time I put it on her. It was a place that can't really be sewn. I would have returned it but felt we should have been more careful. After reading the other reviews, I realize it wasn't just us.

I am very disappointed in this costume, because of it's snug fit and poor construction. The peplum came off as soon as I put it on my daughter. Thank goodness I know a very good seamstress! For the price of this costume, the quality should have been better. The wig is cute, but tangles very easily.

My daughter loves this costume, so I'm glad we bought it. However, it is way overpriced for it's poor construction. Headpiece doesn't fit. I'll need to make major adjustments to it before Halloween.

Comments about Lillian Vernon Mermaid Costume:

This costume is gorgeous, but, as I'm discovering with most Halloween costumes, is just a hair or so too snug, at least the 4-6 is, even for a normal weight child (my child is average height and weight). It also has a few parts that tear easily, but can't be sewn adequately. If Halloween were tomorrow, I might be able to get away with it, but when you're almost four, you'll want to wear this pretty costume more than once or twice...In terms of her height, it's perfect for her, but the rest of the fit is a bit too snug. If I wanted her to wear a flesh-tone bodysuit under it (which I will in the Northeast in October!), it would be pushing it. The filmy trim around the waist and arms, if that tears away from the seam (and it will when you tug the costume into place) cannot be repaired at home as it just shreds from the seam. That in my opinion is the deal-breaker. I found all this out JUST by trying it on my daughter, not even with normal wear. The headpiece is too small and my daughter's head is also average size like the other reviewer (although this could probably be remedied easily with inexpensive supplies from a crafts store).Have not gotten the wig yet, so I can't review it.On the positive end, it IS very pretty, and my daughter adores how she looks in it. So... I am exchanging the costume for the next size up [...](hoping that it's not too long, although the shimmery parts do appear strong enough to withstand a little hemming or pinning).

My child loves this wig. She can jump around and it doesn't fall off! The cap holding it to the head is an excellent design. I wish the wig wouldn't get so knotted, but my child doesn't mind and that's all that matters.

Very cute, looked just like the picture my daughter is very excited about wearing it for halloween. I looked at the way it was made and it seems to be very duratable. My only concern is how it will wash up. But as long as we get thru halloween I really do not care.
