Lillian Vernon is well known for offering unique merchandise and great values. Founded in 1951 as Vernon Specialties, Lilly Menasche Hochberg took the company name from her hometown of Mt. Vernon, NY. At age 22, the recently married, pregnant, and looking for a work-at-home income, Lilly used $2000 received as wedding gifts to buy advertising in Seventeen Magazine, purchase leather handbags and belts for $2.99 and $1.99 each from her father’s leather goods company, and buy 24-karat gold lettering for monograms, which she, herself, hand-applied to the items from her kitchen table. The ad was an overwhelming success and from there the business burgeoned. The rest is history.
